Today, I just received an amazing bucket that my daughter, Kirstin ordered from you for my Christmas present. I cried when I opened the box, full of tears of joy.
I went through a difficult divorce in 1995, and after separating in April, wanted to take my 4 young children on a small vacation to get away and just take the stress off all of our shoulders. I was financially strapped at the time. Wanted to go to an island, far away from life. Beaver Island was where I chose to go for us because 1) it was indeed an island, 2) it was close to home (Indiana) and 3) I could afford it on very limited dollars. I rented a rather busted old log cabin on the island that had 7 minutes of hot water and my four children, had the time of our lives on that beautiful island. We had a deck of cards and a bag of pennies for entertainment; no TV, no cell phones, no video games. Just the quaint little town, a very tiny rented car with a stick shift (we had to fly over on the puddle jumper).
I remember going into your boat shop and at that time, you had a big old black lab or someone did. He was so sweet. I was so impressed with your buckets, but they were far too expensive for me to even begin to think about buying. My family is from Norway, with many sea-faring cousins, my father, and my uncles with a deep appreciation for wood, wooden boats with the old diesel engines. And when I saw your buckets, it reminded me of home in Norway. Nonetheless, given the tightness of my budget, I only appreciated your beautiful woodworking from my eyes and couldn’t justify popping for one of your beautiful buckets.
My daughter, Kirstin, with whom I am the closest, remembered our Beaver Island visit, remember how I had admired your buckets, and this is what she got me for Christmas. Beaver Island was a lifesaving, enriching visit for me and my children. It alleviated our stress, and allowed us to begin to adjust to family life with me as a single mom. It united us in ways that don’t really have words.
I am today, a very proud mom; a university professor, with four grown children who I love so dearly and my Kirstin, gifted me today, with one of your beautiful buckets that brings back so many deep and rich memories. I thank you for making such a magnificent bucket and shipping it to me to receive today. You and your shop, my daughter, our earlier visit, 20 years ago, to Beaver Island has touched my heart today in a way that you cannot truly know. Please never relinquish this fine art of woodworking. Your work is more than a bucket to this Norwegian Indiana lady.
Thank you so very kindly,
